About Perry Ellis:

Perry Ellis was a popular fashion designer in the 1970s and 1980s before his untimely death in 1986. Born and educated in Virginia, Ellis initially entered the fashion world through the retail side. Earning a master's degree in retailing from New York University, he moved to Virginia to work as a buyer and merchandiser. He co-founded his own retail store before moving back to New York to join a sportswear company. There, Ellis designed his first line of women's clothing.

Although Ellis could not sketch a fashion design, his experience with the fashion industry enabled him to create one of the most successful sportswear lines of the 1970s. He began Perry Ellis Intimate Apparel in 1978. The brand expanded into menswear, accessories, shoes and perfumes. The first Perry Ellis fragrances, Perry Ellis for Women and Perry Ellis for Men, debuted in 1985.

Perry Ellis was an American fashion designer, famous for his menswear. After the death of Perry Ellis, a series of notable designers including Isaac Mizrahi, Marc Jacobs and Tom Ford have worked for the company. The womenswear collection was dropped in 2003, but the comapny remains successful and notable today for its high-end menswear and fragrances.
